Amsoft[Note 1], était une filiale entièrement détenue par Amstrad, fondée en 1984 et ré-intégrée avec sa société mère en 1989. L'objectif était de fournir une infrastructure logicielle et de services initiale pour les utilisateurs de la gamme des ordinateurs Amstrad, les Amstrad CPC et, à partir de 1986, le Sinclair ZX Spectrum.

Histoire[modifier | modifier le code]

Lors du développement de son premier ordinateur domestique, l'Amstrad CPC464, Amstrad a évalué qu'une partie du succès des machines de ses concurrents était le soutien d'une infrastructure croissante de logiciels et de services. Etant un nouveau venu sur le marché informatique, Amstrad a décidé de créer artificiellement cette infrastructure pour le lancement de ses propres ordinateurs. En , Amstrad a fondé sa division Amsoft, dirigée par Roland Perry et William Poel qui, à l'époque, supervisaient également le développement du CPC464 d'Amstrad.

Plus important encore, Amsoft a agi à titre d'éditeur de jeux et de logiciels d'affaires pour les ordinateurs Amstrad. La plupart de ses produits logiciels ont fait l'objet de licences de divers développeurs tiers et ont été publiés sous le label Amsoft. Cela a également fourni un moyen sans risque pour les studios de logiciels établis d'essayer leurs produits sur le marché émergent du CPC Amstrad. En plus de l'édition de logiciels, Amsoft a été chargé des relations avec la presse et de la promotion des consommateurs, notamment la création et le maintien du Club des utilisateurs d'Amstrad et la publication de son périodique, le CPC464 User (plus tard Amstrad Computer User).

Lorsqu'un support tiers fiable a été mis en place, Amsoft a progressivement abandonné l'édition de logiciels et a vendu le Club Utilisateur Amstrad ainsi que le magazine utilisateur. En 1989, Amsoft a été entièrement intégrée à la principale société Amstrad et a cessé d'exister en tant qu'entité distincte[1].
