CHARLES III the Simple one (Simple did not mean Stupid but Honest) (born on 17 September 879, dead on October 7 929) King de France (Francie Western): reign 898-922

Surnomm Simple, wire posthumous of Louis the Stammerer and grandson of Charles the Bald person, it was born on September 17 879, and did not have to divide the kingdom of France, from which a part was divided between Louis III and Carloman, his/her brothers, while the other part was invaded by the large ones of the State.

With close the death of Louis III and Carloman, it seemed that Charles had to go up on the throne; but the lords pled his youth, threw doubts about the legitimacy of its birth, and laid out of the crown in favour of Charles the Large one, under pretext that France, de.toutes.parts attacked by the Norman ones, needed a powerful prince to defend it. France was badly defended, and Charles the Large one perishes victim of the factions which had called it.

The only average drive out Norman kingdom was to press itself around the legitimate monarch: but this means was not employed. To have a right idea of the confusion which reigned then, it is enough to notice that there was a regent for Charles the Simple one, while Charles the Large one controlled under the title of king. After the death of Charles the Large one, arrived at the beginning of 888, Charles the Simple one was still far away from the throne because of

Its youth. Eudes, count de Paris, were elected king; what did not prevent from crowning Charles Simple 29 January 893: it touched then at its quatorzime year.

The France thus had two rival monarchs, though its territory was much decreased by the usurpation of the lords. Eudes having died on January 3 898, Charles was only king de France, but with if few being able, that it was tiny room to be given has Rollon, head of Norman, old Neustrie in all sovereignty, and his/her Giselle daughter in marriage; Rollon required moreover the duchy of Brittany, and the king agreed to it, because it was neither enough powerful to refuse it, nor enough Master of Brittany to believe to give something.

The disorder which reigned in France was extended on all Europe; everywhere feudality was armed against the royal capacity; everywhere the thrones were or vacant, or occupied at the same time by several sovereigns. Charles had managed to seize again Lorraine, which had been separated from France. It is the only title which it has with its glory; and however this glorious action awoke the factions, because the factions did not fear anything as much as a king who would be enough powerful to be made obey; also did not dare it to take advantage of the rights which it had with the imperial crown.

Charles mergansers knew its weakness, and was not unaware of that the lords all were almost dedicated to Robert, brother of Eudes, which aspired to the royalty. Not wanting to choose a minister among the large ones, it gave all its confidence to Haganon, simple gentleman, who had all qualities necessary to control and France and his king. The only wrong of Charles was not to hide the ascending one enough that it had granted to its favourite, ascending such, that, without his permission, nobody approached any more of the monarch; what made say to the duke of Saxony, shocked not to have been able to be presented at the king: "Or Haganon will be a soon king with Charles, or Charles will be soon nothing any more but one simple gentleman with Hagamon."

In effect, Robert, benefitting from the dissatisfaction with the lords, could engage them in an assembly held in Soissons, to declare that they did not recognize any more Charles for king. This revolt took soon the characters of a civil war, and Robert was crowned into 922.

All was in the destiny of Charles the Simple one not to be never an only king in France. It did not lose courage; because, the following year, it delivered to factious battle in which it killed Robert of its own hand; but the heads of party reproduce easily in times of discord; Hugues, wire of Robert, revived the courage of the soldiers to the sight of the corpse of his father, and pushed Charles so highly, that it obliged it to escape.

This prince sought an asylum close to Herbert, count de Vermandois, whom it was authorized to look like hottest of his partisans. Herbert held it captive in Castle-Thierry, then with Pronne, and treated with the opposed party, all the more with his advantage, that it was enough for him, to be made fear, to threaten to return freedom to his king; what it did indeed, but for few days.

The crown has was submitted in Raoul or Rodolphe, duke of Burgundy, which was crowned on July 13 923, in the church of Saint Mdard's Day de Soissons. Hugues the Large one, wire of Robert, had wisdom to resist the party which wanted to choose it for king. Charles the Simple one ceased living only on October 7 929, in the his 50 year of age, & the 37 of his reign, and the 7 year of his captivity. He left of the queen Ogise, his fourth wife, a son, that this princess took along to England, and who is known under the name of Louis d' Outremer .
