Esther Lord Batchelder ( - )[1] est une chimiste, enseignanteet experte américaine dans le domaine de la nutrition[2].

Biographie[modifier | modifier le code]

Après avoir été diplômée du Connecticut College en 1919, avec une double spécialisation en chimie et en économie domestique[3], Batchelder obtient un doctorat en chimie à l'université Columbia en 1929[2],[4], en écrivant sur un sujet en chimie alimentaire, sous la direction de Henry C. Sherman[5].

De 1929 à 1932, elle est spécialiste de la nutrition pour le magazine féminin Delineator[2]. Elle occupe ensuite des postes de professeure adjointe de nutrition au State College of Washington (1932-1934) et à l'université de l'Arizona (1934-1936)[2]. En 1936, elle devient présidente du département d'économie domestique du Rhode Island State College[3],[5],[6].

Pendant plus de deux décennies, à partir de 1942, elle travaille pour le ministère de l'Agriculture des États-Unis, d'abord dans la branche de la nutrition humaine (à partir de 1943, le Bureau de la nutrition humaine et de l'économie domestique), où elle devient chef de la division de l'alimentation et de la nutrition[7] ; de 1956 jusqu'à sa retraite en 1965, elle est directrice de la division de la recherche sur l'habillement et le logement[2].

En 1947, Esther Batchelder est membre de la mission alimentaire du ministère de la Guerre en Allemagne[8]. Face aux pénuries alimentaires de l'après-guerre en Allemagne cet hiver-là, elle a contribué à la déshydratation de 120 000 tonnes de légumes[9].

Esther Batchelder est un membre de longue date du conseil d'administration de son alma mater, le Connecticut College ; élue pour la première fois pour un mandat de trois ans en 1929, elle a siégé au conseil sans interruption de 1937 à 1973[4],[8].
